Is Metaxourgeio Safe?

The Truth About Athens’ Misunderstood Neighbourhood

One of the questions I get asked most often by guests staying at The Silk House is:

“Is your area safe? I read that it’s unsafe to walk around.”

It’s a fair question, and one I completely understand. Mind you, I come from Singapore, a city where you can comfortably walk around at 3 a.m. without a second thought. My benchmark for safety is probably quite high.

So, when people ask me, “Is Metaxourgeio dangerous?”, my answer is always the same: It’s far more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

Is Metaxourgeio Safe?

The honest answer is yes, there are parts of central Athens where you need to be more aware of your surroundings, particularly in some areas closer to Omonia and on certain streets late at night. But that’s true of many major cities around the world.

The problem is that when people talk about safety in Metaxourgeio, they often paint the entire neighbourhood with one broad brush, as though every street and every corner is exactly the same.

The truth is very different.

Metaxourgeio is one of Athens’ most diverse and evolving neighbourhoods. It is a place where old and new, gritty and beautiful, traditional and creative exist side by side.

Some streets still face social challenges that have affected parts of central Athens for decades. Other streets are home to beautifully restored neoclassical buildings, boutique hotels, art galleries, theatres, trendy cafés, and some of Athens’ most exciting restaurants.

The Metaxourgeio Most Tourists Never See

Like many urban neighbourhoods around the world, Metaxourgeio is undergoing a transformation.

Over the last decade, artists, entrepreneurs, designers, and independent businesses have breathed new life into the area. It has become one of Athens’ emerging cultural districts and a destination for travellers seeking an authentic experience beyond the traditional tourist hotspots.

Yet when people hear a single story about one corner of the neighbourhood, they often assume it defines the whole area.

My Personal Experience Living and Working in Metaxourgeio

As someone who spends a great deal of time in the neighbourhood and hosts travellers from around the world, I have never felt unsafe in my part of Metaxourgeio. And I am not being biased!

I’ve met wonderful neighbours, passionate local business owners, and a community that genuinely cares about preserving the character of this historic district.

Would I recommend exercising normal city awareness? Absolutely.

Would I tell visitors to avoid judging the entire neighbourhood based on a few online comments or one particular street? Also absolutely.

Why I Love Metaxourgeio

Walk through the neighbourhood during the day and you’ll discover:

  1. Colourful street art and murals—a tour I did personally
  2. Independent cafés and bakeries
  3. Hidden courtyards
  4. Contemporary galleries and theatres
  5. Beautiful neoclassical architecture
  6. Some of Athens’ most interesting local restaurants
  7. A creative and welcoming community spirit

It isn’t polished or perfect, and perhaps that’s exactly its charm. Many of these hidden places sit behind busy graffiti, and sometimes you have to look a little harder to find them. Athens comes alive when the sun goes down. Streets that seem quiet during the day are suddenly filled with people, conversation and music. What looks empty in the daylight becomes full of life at night. That’s Athens for you.

It feels real.

It feels lived in.

It feels like Athens.

Is Metaxourgeio a Good Place to Stay in Athens?

If you’re looking for:

  1. An authentic Athenian experience
  2. Beautiful historic buildings
  3. Excellent restaurants and cafés
  4. Easy access to the city centre
  5. A neighbourhood with character and creativity

Then Metaxourgeio may surprise you.

Like many urban areas around the world, it has pockets that require a little more caution and others that are vibrant, charming, and full of life.

Perhaps the greatest misunderstanding about Metaxourgeio is that people expect every neighbourhood to fit neatly into a category: safe or unsafe, good or bad.

Metaxourgeio refuses to fit into a box.

It is real. It is layered. It is evolving.

And maybe that’s precisely why so many of us who know it well have fallen in love with it.

Because beneath the headlines and stereotypes lies one of Athens’ authentic neighbourhoods—a place that reminds us that cities are not perfect postcards, but living, breathing communities full of contradictions, character, and stories waiting to be discovered.

" We had such a lovely stay at the Hill. It’s incredibly neat and well organised, all you need is present at the apartment. We walked up the hill in the morning for a beautiful view over the city and if you’re looking for a nice place to spend an evening nearby, Jazz in Jazz is recommended! "
