The vintage Olivetti typewriter fits perfectly in Silk House. Introduced in the early 1930s, the M40 came from an era when letters, accounts and ideas took shape slowly and deliberately. Olivetti developed the M40 around 1929-1930 to replace its earlier M20 model. Of course, its original setting remains a mystery. That uncertainty is part of its charm.

Still, it is easy to imagine a similar typewriter in an Athenian household. It may have carried news, plans, private thoughts, unfinished poems, or business correspondence. For guests, it is a gentle reminder to write again:

The OTE Group Telecommunications Museum records that automatic rotary-dial phones first appeared in Greece between 1910 and 1930. During the 1930s, black Bakelite-and-steel desktop models appeared alongside more luxurious phones.

We’ll never know where this particular Olivetti first rang. However, similar models could plausibly have appeared in well-connected Greek households. Private landlines remained a luxury for many Athenians at the time.
