Kypseli Theatrical Heritage: 1970s Glamour and Costume Jewellery

The Hive and Kypseli’s Theatrical Heritage

At The Hive luxury apartment, Kypseli's theatrical heritage remains present in every detail. Antique mirrors, soft lighting and vintage-inspired furnishings create an atmosphere of nostalgia and quiet sophistication. Its restored interiors evoke the neighbourhood's celebrated golden age.

Athens Broadway: A Restored Theatre in Kypseli

Just steps away from The Hive, a historic venue is preparing for its next act. On Agiou Meletiou, the Broadway Cinema is being restored as Athens Broadway, an 800-seat theatre. Original 1970s features, including its seats, ceiling details and photo-lined wall panels, will be preserved. These details will retain the venue’s distinctive character.

At the time of publication, Athens Broadway is expected to open in December 2026. Its opening production is scheduled to be Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile.

Kypseli’s Theatrical Heritage in the 1970s

To understand this revival, it helps to revisit Kypseli’s glamorous 1970s. By then, the district had entered the final chapter of its golden era. However, it had not lost its cultivated charm. Its theatres still drew fashionable crowds for late evening performances.

Kypseli’s Cinematic Legacy

The neighbourhood’s theatrical energy also extended to the cinema. Along Fokionos Negri and nearby streets, cinemas, theatres and cultural spaces defined Kypseli’s lively evening life. Today, the retro Stella open-air cinema offers a reminder of that showbiz past, while independent stages keep Kypseli’s connection to live performance.

Costume Jewellery in 1970s Kypseli

For the women moving through Kypseli’s theatre-going circles, dressing for the evening was part of the occasion. Athenian style tended to fall between polished, high-society glamour and a more bohemian sensibility. Costume jewellery added individuality and an accessible finishing touch.

Pearls, gold jewellery and statement brooches were often associated with a more formal look. Bold costume pieces, meanwhile, brought playfulness to evening outfits. Together, these styles reflected the varied cultural life of the community.

The Women of Old Kypseli

Beyond its fashionable evenings, Kypseli and nearby Patissia were home to several influential Greek women:

  1. Comic actress Georgia Vasileiadou was born here and remained active into the 1970s.
  2. Poet Kiki Dimoula lived in Kypseli for most of her life.
  3. Actress, director and costume designer Elli Vozikiadou lived for a time on Koundou Street. She was closely tied to the area’s stage world.
  4. Singer-songwriter Arleta later settled near Kypseli Square.

Their work in theatre, poetry, film and music helped shape the area’s creative character.

Fanari: Vintage Jewellery in Kypseli

That blend of splendour and individuality still endures in Kypseli today. At 79 Agiou Meletiou, Fanari is Ariadni Kakia’s vintage jewellery and trinket shop. Inside, Art Deco objects, costume jewellery, gifts and curiosities create the feeling of a small, personal museum.

Ariadni, who previously worked as a French teacher, explains that her husband opened the shop around 50 years ago. Later, inspired by her love of jewellery and Greek mythology, she took it over.

“What I like about Kypseli is how it bridges the contemporary and the traditional,” she says. “Fanari does the same for the neighbourhood, preserving its old charm in pieces that people can own, treasure, and wear.”

“Athens is a big part of Fanari because it’s a city shaped by many influences,” she adds.

Kypseli’s Living Archive

That layered character, Ariadni believes, helps explain why visitors are drawn to Kypseli. She mentions its bookshops, old-fashioned tavernas, markets, boutiques, galleries and theatres. “Kypseli is a living archive,” she says. “Every street has its own history.”

Her memories give this local history a personal dimension. When I ask about the 1960s and 1970s theatre scene, her affection for that era is clear.

She picks up a pair of pearl clip-on earrings. “Women came here after the theatre in those days to browse and find their sparkle,” she recalls. “Every piece that left the shop carried a story. I loved knowing where my treasures were going.”

Turning to Kypseli itself, she says: “Traces of its theatrical past remain in its former cinemas, cafés and façades.” “Long after any final curtain falls, Kypseli will reinvent itself again and again without forgetting its past.”
