Greek Easter in Athens: A Local’s Guide from The Halo Collection
Stay in Athens at Easter, and you’ll see why it's the most important Greek holiday of the year. The last week before Easter Sunday, known as Holy Week, begins with daily church services that set the tone for the days ahead. Many Greeks fast just during this time, following a deep religious practice that has its roots in the early Christian era.
Holy Week Traditions
Ceremonies throughout Holy Week carry a sombre tone, recalling the final events before Easter. They are particularly emotional on Good Friday, marking the crucifixion, when a candlelight procession (the Epitaphios) is carried through the streets in the evening.
Despite the sombre mood, women bake butter, vanilla, and orange Easter biscuits (koulouria) and a braided sweet, brioche-like bread (tsoureki). Families dye eggs a deep, symbolic red to represent the blood of Christ and his sealed tomb. See them in supermarkets and bakeries across Athens, adding colour, aroma, and excitement for Easter.
Holy Saturday
Easter Saturday is brighter, filled with anticipation for the Resurrection service. People gather at their local churches and, just before midnight, the lights go out and are relit when the priest proclaims, "Christ has risen!" The "Holy Flame" (from Jerusalem) is passed from candle to candle across the congregation; some churches also allow fireworks. It’s a moving experience, and you shouldn’t miss it. After church, families enjoy a late meal of Greek Easter soup (magiritsa).
Easter Sunday
On Easter Sunday, fasting ends and, throughout Athens, you’ll see lively outdoor gatherings as families cook, eat, and celebrate together. If you’d like an authentic Easter experience in Athens, I’d be delighted to welcome you to The Halo Collection.
